Exploring David. Diagnostic tests and state of conservation

''An art 'myth' like Michelangelo's David, according to one of Antonio Paolucci's favourite definitions, requires special attention even insofar as its physical nature is concerned. The primary targets of investigation should be the constituent material, the marble itself, the changes that have occurred over the centuries, and the foreign materials on the surface, be they atmospheric dust deposits or products applied during previous restoration treatments. In parallel with the investigation on the statue, it is essential to study and determine whether and to what extent the environment in which it stands, the large room known as the Tribune, in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, satisfies the criteria for safe and appropriate conservation.''
