Lamento Sertanejo. New citizens, messianic leaderships and the new centrality of the northeast in Brazilian politics

Brazilian democracy is at a crossroads, the country is facing unprecedented level of political polarization and is going through one of the worst crises of its history. This book retraces the history of Brazil from the democratic transition, focusing on how the creation of new citizens, the new centrality of the northeast and Lula's leadership evolutions are the reasons behind the persistence of the Partido dos Trabalhadores as the ruling party, and of the unprecedented success of the sitting President. It will also discuss how some of the results of "Lula's era" lays behind the recent political turmoil, with the institutions under attack and new cleavages shaking an already fragile democracy.
